Which generation is in your kitchen
Viking changed hands at the end of 2012 and the line was re-engineered over the years that followed. On this brand more than any other we service, the serial number decides the repair.
Professional 5 Series
The core of the range line. Sealed burners, heavy cast grates, the configuration most Miami kitchens were fitted with.
Professional 7 Series
The upper line, with the heavier build and the wider feature set. Parts differ from the 5 Series more than the shared name suggests.
Tuscany
Built in Italy from 2015, with cantilevered brass burners and color finishes. A different machine from the Professional line, not a trim level of it.
Pre-2013 units
Anything from before the ownership change. Still very serviceable, but parts, procedures and known failure points differ from what came after — which is why we ask for the serial first.
The part that matters
The serial number decides the repair
On most brands the model is enough. On this one it genuinely is not.
Two identical-looking ranges can be two different machines.
Viking was acquired at the end of 2012, and the years that followed brought a substantial re-engineering of the line. Components, tolerances and service procedures moved. A range from before that work and a range from after can look the same across a kitchen and share almost nothing behind the panel.
That is why the first thing we ask for is the serial, not the model. It tells us which generation you have, which parts fit, and what is worth checking before anything is ordered. Guessing here is the fastest way to a wrong part and a second visit — and on a range this size, a second visit is a second day of a kitchen out of action.
Serial before model
It fixes the generation. The model alone does not, because names carried across the change.
Parts are not interchangeable
A component that fits a later unit may not fit an earlier one with the same model designation.
Older units are still worth it
A pre-2013 Viking is heavy, repairable and sits in cabinetry cut to fit. Age alone is not a reason to replace.
Inside the circuit
On the refrigeration side, sealed system work is EPA 608 only — federal law, not preference.
Common faults
What it usually turns out to be
Tell us which line matches and the truck leaves stocked for it.
Burner clicks but will not light
Igniter or a clogged burner port
Yellow, lazy flame on one burner only
Burner port, or an orifice for the other fuel
Oven never reaches temperature
Bake element, igniter or temperature sensor
Door locked after a self-clean cycle
Latch motor or control
Griddle or simmer plate heating unevenly
Element or the surface thermostat under it
Not cooling, freezer side still cold
Evaporator fan or the defrost circuit
Runs constantly and never cycles off
Condenser packed with dust, or a loss of charge
Wine cabinet drifting off its set point
Door seal or thermostat
Water pooling under a drawer
Blocked defrost drain
Ice maker stopped producing
Water inlet valve or the ice maker module
Standing water after every cycle
Drain pump or check valve
Dishes come out wet
Vent or fan drying assembly
Film left on glassware
Spray arm or inlet water flow
Leak at the door behind the custom panel
Door gasket or tub seal
Cycle starts then stops within a minute
Water inlet valve or a float switch
This is what we usually find, not a diagnosis. The point is to tell you early whether you are looking at a part or at the sealed system, because those are two different conversations about cost.
If you can smell gas near a Viking range or rangetop, call your gas utility first and leave the appliance alone. That call comes before ours, every time.
Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you what it usually means.
Parts and timing
What the wait actually depends on
Viking sits inside a large group with a real service network, so availability is generally good — as long as we are ordering against the right generation.
Wear items
Igniters, burner caps and ports, grates, thermistors, gaskets. Usually held or available the same or next day.
Boards and modules
Control boards, latch motors, ice maker modules. Ordered against the serial. A few days is typical.
Sealed system components
Compressors, evaporators, driers on the refrigeration side. Longest of the three, and the visit itself is longer.
The generation gap
On an older unit a part may be superseded rather than discontinued. That usually means a small adaptation on site, and we will tell you if it applies before the order goes in.
Questions
Asked about Viking
The rest of our answers are on the home page. These are the ones specific to this brand.
Are you an authorized Viking service center?
No. We are independent, with no affiliation to or authorization from Viking Range, LLC. If your appliance is still inside its factory warranty, call the manufacturer — an independent repair can end that cover. Once the warranty is out, an independent shop is usually faster and costs less.
Why do you want the serial number and not just the model?
Because Viking changed hands at the end of 2012 and the line was re-engineered afterwards. Model names carried across that change, so two ranges with the same designation can take different parts. The serial is what separates them.
I have heard older Viking ranges had problems. Is mine worth repairing?
Usually yes. The reputation comes from a period before the ownership change, and it was real — but the ranges themselves are heavy, mechanical and built to be rebuilt. A Miami kitchen with a 48-inch Viking has cabinetry cut around it. If the repair does not make sense we will say so, but age alone is not the reason.
Is Tuscany the same machine as the Professional series?
No. Tuscany is built in Italy and arrived in 2015 with a different burner design and a different construction. It shares a badge with the Professional line, not an interior.
Can you work on the outdoor grill and the outdoor refrigeration too?
Yes. In this climate outdoor units age faster than anything inside — salt and humidity go after the burners and the condensers first. If the outdoor kitchen is on the same property, it can be the same visit.
