Which generation is in your kitchen
Miele runs generations rather than model years, and two units that look nothing alike can share the same electronics. The display is the quickest tell.
Generation 7000
Full touch display and proximity sensing that wakes the panel as you approach. The current built-in generation, from wall and steam ovens to coffee systems and warming drawers.
Generation 6000
The previous generation and still the one we see most in kitchens fitted before the last few years. Smaller displays and simpler controls on many models.
MasterCool refrigeration
Model numbers beginning K, F, KF or KWT, ending Vi for panel-ready fronts and SF for stainless. Tall built-in units, about 84 inches high, heavy, with Push2open doors and a machine compartment that has to be reached from the top or the bottom.
Design lines
PureLine, ContourLine, VitroLine and ArtLine describe the front — handle, glass and trim — not the machine behind it. Two different-looking ovens can be identical inside.
The part that matters
Soft water, and why scale still happens
Atlanta city water is soft, which is good news for a steam oven — and the reason its descaling reminders get put off.
Soft water slows limescale. It does not stop it.
Most homes around Atlanta run on soft surface water drawn from the Chattahoochee and Lake Lanier, and that is kind to every Miele appliance that boils water — the steam oven, the combi-steam, the coffee system. Kind is not immune. Each one passes water through a small heater and leaves a little mineral behind, and each times its descaling reminder from the water hardness it has been told about.
Set correctly for soft city water, the reminder comes rarely and is easy to postpone. Left at the factory setting, it comes more often than the water needs, and people learn to dismiss it. On a private well further out the water can be much harder, and the same factory setting may be too low. Whichever it is, the scale keeps building until the steam generator or the brew unit stops — and at that point it is a part, not a maintenance visit. Many of those failures are avoidable.
Set the hardness to your water
City water and well water need different settings. The reminder is only as good as the number entered.
Run the descale when asked
The descaling program handles routine build-up when it is run on time. It does not recover a generator that has already scaled up.
Steam generator and brew unit
These are the two parts that fail from scale, and both are ordered rather than carried.
Dishwasher softener too
Most Miele dishwashers soften water with reactivation salt. On soft city water the setting can come down; on a well it matters more.
Common faults
What the symptom usually points to
Find your symptom, then tell us on the phone — with Miele the generation matters too, so keep the model number handy.
One temperature zone warm, the rest holding
Zone evaporator, damper or the sensor for that zone
Runs constantly and never cycles off
Condenser starved of air, or a loss of charge
Push2open door will not release or will not latch
Door mechanism or its drive
Water pooling under a drawer
Blocked defrost drain
Interior lighting out across a whole section
Low-voltage lighting loom or its driver
Steam oven fills but produces no steam
Steam generator, often scaled up, or the level sensor
Descaling program starts then reports a fault
Water level too low, or the descaling circuit blocked
White scale around the steam outlet
Descaling overdue, then the generator itself
Oven heats but the display stays dark
Control board or the ribbon behind it
Water sitting in the cavity after a steam cycle
Drain pump or a blocked cavity drain
Coffee system jams mid-brew
Brew unit seals or the drive
Grinder runs but no coffee comes through
Grinder burrs or a blocked outlet
Milk frother weak or not drawing
Milk valve or the frother boiler
Dishwasher reports an inlet or drain fault
Inlet valve, drain pump or the sensor reporting it
Film left on glassware
Spray arm, inlet flow, or water hardness set wrong
This is the usual finding, not a diagnosis. Early on we want to know whether it is a part, scale or the sealed system — each is a different conversation about time and cost.
If you smell gas near a Miele gas cooktop, do not switch anything on or off. Leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. That call comes before ours, every time.
Read us the message on the display, or describe what the appliance is doing. We will tell you what it usually means.
Parts and timing
How long Miele parts take
Some Miele parts are ordered per unit; you get the timeline before the work starts.
Wear items
Seals, brew unit gaskets, spray arms, inlet valves. Often available quickly; you get the timeline before the visit.
Boards and displays
Control boards and touch panels are ordered against the model and serial.
Steam generators and brew units
The two scale-driven failures. Ordered rather than carried, and the timeline depends on the generation.
Timeline first
We tell you the realistic wait before the work starts, not after.
Questions
Asked about Miele
Warranty, insurance and scheduling are covered on the home page. These are the Miele-specific ones.
Are you an authorized Miele service center?
No. We are independent, with no affiliation to or authorization from Miele. While the factory warranty is running, Miele's own service network handles covered repairs, so start there. Once it has ended, we can take the appliance on.
How long do Miele parts take?
Boards and steam generators are ordered against the model and serial and can take several days; you get the timeline before we start.
My steam oven stopped making steam. Is that expensive?
It depends on whether the generator is scaled or failed. On soft city water it is less often scale than people expect, so the level sensor and the generator itself are checked as well; on well water, scale is the first suspect. We can tell you which after the diagnostic, before anything is ordered.
The oven has a descaling program. Why did it scale up anyway?
The program runs only when you start it, and the reminder to start it is timed from the water hardness set in the appliance. If that setting does not match your water, or the reminder was put off a few times, the generator scales up between descales. It happens on soft water too, just more slowly.
Does the panel on a MasterCool column have to come off?
Often, yes. These are tall, heavy units and the machine compartment is reached from the top or the bottom. Floor and adjacent cabinetry are covered first, and the panel goes back to its original alignment.
